COUNTERPARTS VS Groovey.TV’s The Gauntlet! Interview Series

(Rules of The Gauntlet: The artist (Like in this case the badass COUNTERPARTS.) is sent 75 questions from which they must choose  at least  12 to answer in whatever medium they choose: written, audio,or video. The questions range from standard to ridiculous.)

COUNTERPARTSHardcore masters of badassery COUNTERPARTS from Hamilton, Ontario have been producing some of the finest tunes in their genre for the last few years now.  Their 2011 release The Current Will Carry Us is nothing short of a classic and their next album The Difference Between Hell And Home is set to drop on July 23rd, 2013 on Victory Records.  Here are COUNTERPARTS vocalist Brendan Murphy’s answers to  Groovey.TV’s The Gauntlet! Interview Series.

1) Top 2 stupidest things you’ve ever done.

Probably the fireworks fight in Worcester, MA or letting Ryan join the band after he already quit once.

2) What’s the bands philosophy? Motto?

The only thing we care about is making music that we actually enjoy, and making sure we have fun doing it. That is the only thing keeping us going. Basically, as long as we are having fun, we will continue to make music. The day that this becomes a “real job,” I’m gone. If I wanted a real career I sure as hell wouldn’t be yelling in a hardcore band. I would have went to post-secondary and I wouldn’t blow my money on useless crap.

3) Who are your influences?

We’re heavily influenced by bands like: Saints Never Surrender, Shai Hulud, Taken, A Textbook Tragedy, Converge, etc. Since day one we’ve really liked the idea of being able to blend genres, and for lack of a better term, do whatever the hell we want musically.

4) Do you have a CD coming out? What’s the scoop on that? Where did you record, style, songs etc.

We do have a record coming out. Our 3rd full length “The Difference Between Hell and Home,” which should be coming out this summer. We recorded with Will Putney at the Machine Shop in Belleville, NJ. Not much to say other than it’s the coolest thing we’ve ever done. Friends and family who have heard a few songs have compared it to our split with Exalt that we put out in 2010. It’s a Counterparts record. If you like us, you’re going to like it. I think… I don’t know.

5) What was the last song you listened to before this interview?

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mayonaise

6) What’s the most embarrassing band you listen to?

Maybe not a “band” but I actively listen to Kesha. I’m not embarrassed. Warrior was an unreal record.

7) Why should people go to your shows?

Because if you’re lucky, you might be able to buy a shirt from me while the rest of the band smoke and drink warm beer in the van.

8) What bands should quit forever and never be seen or heard from again?

If I actually answered this truthfully, I’d probably get my ass beat and we’d have more enemies than we already do… haha.

9) What really pisses you off?

Honestly, every single thing in the world. It’s a horrible way to live.

10) Worst thing ever eaten on the road?

If the catering in Italy doesn’t count, then it would have to be the one time our merch guy and I got food poisoning from eating Pappy’s in St. Louis. Coating an entire McDonald’s parking lot with puke will forever be a funny memory though.

11) What are some of the unwritten rules of touring?

Don’t torrent on the venue’s wifi, you selfish ass

12) If Justin Bieber asked to join your band how would you react?

He’d be in. 100%. Are you kidding me? We’d have to get him to trade in his purple v-necks for some super rare hardcore merch though.

13) Wheelie or endo?

Neither but I can probably catwalk from the sewer to the stop sign…
