(Rules of The Gauntlet: The artist (in this case, Missouri based hard rock band, Dark Below) is sent a butt ton of questions ranging from standard to stupid from which they must choose at least 12 to answer and return them to us with a minimum of tear stains).
Tell me about your new album. The writing, vibe, production/producers, etc.
Josh Campbell (guitar/vocals): We’re working on a new EP right now and we just spent this past weekend doing pre-production. We’re working with the same producer we’ve had on our previous work, Jason Schrick, and it’s amazing how much easier everything goes now versus how it went when we first started working together a few years ago. Everything has been going really well and we’re really excited to get into the studio and start recording.
Top 2 stupidest things you’ve ever done.
JC: Named a band “Downphase” and sold my ’69 Camaro.
What exactly is “Going apeshit?”
JC: That’s what happens when I watch football.
Who are your influences?
JC: I have a ton of different influences, but my biggest ones would probably be Chevelle, 10 Years, and Breaking Benjamin.
How long could you live without money?
JC: Until they shut off my internet.
What was the last song you listened to before this interview?
JC: “Jesus or a Gun” by Fuel.
What’s the most embarrassing band you listen to?
JC: Nickelback. I know they get made fun of all the time, but some of their older stuff kicks ass.
Any tours planned?
JC: Nothing specific yet, but there are definitely some things in the works for next year that we’re looking forward to.
If you were facing unbeatable and fatal odds, what song would you want to check out to? Why?
JC: I’d turn on “Rumor Has It” by Adele and hope it can kill whatever poses such an overwhelming threat to my existence.
There’s a good chance you will look back and be embarrassed by your
current hairstyle. Discuss.
JC: Yeah, you’re probably right. Just like I look back at the bowl cuts I
had in elementary school, I’ll look back at this and just shake my head.
If you could accomplish one thing in a music career what would it be? When you achieve that will you quit?
JC: I don’t really have any one specific goal in mind, I just want us to keep doing this as long as we’re having fun. Obviously, we want to take this as far as we can and there are things I’d like to do, but I don’t think there’s anything we could do where I’d say “OK, that’s it. I’m done now.”
Would you accept 1 million dollars now to give up any and all music forever? If not what is your price?
JC: I don’t think I could do it for any price.
What really pisses you off?
JC: Fucking shitty drivers. Especially shitty drivers who just cruise in the left lane and hold up traffic.
Who the fuck do you think you are?
JC: Who the fuck do you think YOU are?
Worst thing ever eaten?
JC: Onions. They disgust me.
What do you geek out to besides your music? Please geek out on your geekiness.
JC: I’m pretty into video games, football and motocross. Video games are the way I stay connected to a lot of my friends that I don’t get to see that often. I’m a huge football fan, especially college football. And motocross is something I’ve been a fan of my entire life being from the middle of nowhere and riding dirt bikes growing up.
If you had a time machine what would you do with it?
JC: Destroy it. That shit always causes problems in the movies.
