(Rules of The Gauntlet: The artist (Like in this case the trippy ass Alternative Hip Hop duo Galaxy Cloak) is sent a butt ton of questions ranging from standard to stupid from which they must choose at least 12 (and these celestial lunatics are over-achievers!) to answer and return them to us with a minimum of tear stains.)
Tell me why your music rules. Or sucks.
The answers quite simple my aristocratic associate; Because we blend cosmic dust and celestial matter to manifest a musical anomaly that can double as a weapon of the ages. Both me, [MENES the Pharaoh] and Sorcery Orchestra have been enthralled with studying and creating music for quite awhile, and have seem fads come and go. We wanted to do something beyond the normal realms of what is called Hip-Hop or Rap, to transcend it. And I wont say we did exactly that, but we tried. Honestly, just take a listen… You’ll know why it rules.
Which Muppet would you marry, which one would you wanna knife fight in a swamp, and which one should be our global emperor? Why?
[MENES] I would marry the one with the most money and drugs, I would knife fight the puppeteers in a dirty dingy swamp, and I would instill myself as global emperor. No more questions about puppets.
[SORCERY] I would woo miss piggy with my mpc like a snake charmer entrances his slick tongued serpent, and make her do my laundry. I get mad dirty all the time.
Tell me about your new album. The writing, vibe, production/producers, etc.
It’s called GALAXY CLOAK, a self-titled LP, and it is a group that consist of MENES the Pharaoh [Emcee] and Sorcery Orchestra [Producer]. Its an ODD-Era mixed with classic Hip-Hop formulating a galactic mess. It’s meant to sound like nothing that is coming out, or at least nothing that’s coming out frequently. Imagery based on Lovecraftian lore and self exploration of the grey matter in our brains. It dropped on ESQUE RECORDS April 12, 2016 and our first video premier was April 5, 2016. Go to WWW.ESQUERECORDS.COM for
mad merchandise! From CD’s to Hoodies shirts and posters. Its 15 tracks of pure chaos and spine tingling frequencies, I think it has its place in Hip-Hop and will be cemented as so. I hope you all enjoy the grenades of our labour!
What are you Working on right now:
I [MENES the Pharaoh] have been constantly creating for 10+ years now and have a PLETHORA of music released, and unreleased. My crew is called BASEMENT DWELLAZ and you can find out about us on Bandcamp. Theres lots of music to be heard. I plan on releasing a couple more albums this year [Party in a Pyramid Produced by GoldenMask`, Purgatory from the Basement Dwellaz, Produced by Noyz] and of coarse another EP/LP with Sorcery Orchestra as GALAXY CLOAK.
I [SORCERY ORCHESTRA] am working on numerous projects for numerous scoundrels, and many many more instrumental tapes, the likes of which can be found on my bandcamp or on the streets of Sacramento on a random park bench, so keep those eyes peeled!
Why do you make your style of Music? Why not polka? or Japanese symphonic folk metal? or..?
[MENES] Japanese Symphony… That’s dope shit right there… I don’t know; I was always drawn towards Hip-Hop since I was a youngin. It always just had an appeal to me, and hell I don’t have a singing voice or any sort of instrumental talent, but I have a good voice, so emceeing was genuinely the perfect taper. Writing has always been one of my things, from books to poetry, so I knew I needed to do something with it. Hip-Hops in my blood, and if you check my back catalogue, is you will never doubt that.
[SORCERY] Digging up records and waiting for the perfect loop, hearing a few seconds of audio and going crazy with it. I make beats the so called classic way with hardware and records on my mpc2500. Love that machine. I’ve been in love with sampling since I was a little tyke, so this experimental hip hop, sludge, funk, whatever it is I do, fits that love perfectly.
Show us your best interpretive dance about your favorite TV show.:
Gangsta’s don’t dance; we boogie.
Which voice in your head is the craziest:
[MENES] Definitely the Pharaoh.. He’s always plotting on something, whether its building an underground pyramid or doing a bank robbery. My most abstract thoughts/ideas come from my dreams. A lot of my rhymes, and the couple of Novels I’m working on have spawned from them, so whoever that is, manifesting those dreams, he’s arguably just as crazy.
[SORCERY] The voice that told me to make this shit you’re about to listen to.
What’s the history of your band as told by your favorite fictional character?
As once told by Al’Kazzar the Blood Prince; Galaxy Cloak is what feeds the hunger inside humans for the occult and strange unexplainables. MENES the Pharaoh and Sorcery Orchestra met in a galactic foodbank inhabited by Cthulus and unnamed horrors. Sorcery carrying his MPC, MENES his emerald microphone. Naturally, an uncomfortable eye contact was made and a battle of the elements began with no further initiation. By the end nightmares and horrors alike were surrounding the table doing headspins and cack-a-lacking. Shit just got real after that.
How often do you work on music:
What is your philosophy/motto:
[MENES] To return like the Prodigal Sun. Do what you love, and love what you do. Life is a twisted maze of love and hate. I have equal parts love and hate in my fabrics, we must just find the universal balance of it all. And you better have your Galaxy Cloaked.
[SORCERY] Be positive, tell the important people in you’re life you love them.
What exactly is going Apeshit:
[MENES] It’s definitively ‘wiling the funk out’. Having no compassion for anything around you, and gripping the bars. Blacking out, Dynamically similar to dynamite in a small office space. Basically, its what I do on every track. Basically.
[SORCERY] Hope to get these shows popping off and show you what it is.
Whats the stupidest thing you have ever heard someone say:
[MENES] That is a loaded question, life is full of the obsolete and opinionated armchair activist. People say stupid shit all the time, it’s simply the plague of our earth.
[SORCERY] Folks are very close minded these days. Many times it’s not the stupidest thing I’ve heard said, but the stupidest attitudes I’ve witnessed.
Who are your influences?
[MENES] I’m glad this question came next… Just to name a few; MF DOOM, Wu-tang Clan, Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, Sunz of Man, Nas, Biggie, Poison Flowerz!, M.O.D, Kool Keith, Killah Priest, Lord Finesse and the whole DITC, Bootcamp, DMX, ELP, Sade, Prince, Charles Barry and so so many others… The list is endless, I have a minimum of 800 CD’s that prelude the 2000’s. But I try and get a listen to almost everything.
[SORCERY] Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg, Hall and Oates, MF DOOM, Madlib, Quasimoto, Every Time I Die, Blunted Sultan, Queen, Aesop Rock, Wu-tang, Daughters, Company Flow, The Weeknd, Subtitle, to name a few.
Peace or freedom? (You can’t have both.)Why?
[MENES] Neither are a possibility in todays cogs and gears. We work to live, and live to work. We must find both of these virtues inside ourself, and stop looking for them in the exterior. Walk 2000 steps to the top of a mountain temple in India, that’s both freedom and peace.
Which band member are you positive is an extraterrestrial and what does their planet look like? Details!
[MENES] Both me and Sorcery are most definitely from other planets. I come from a biome of sand bellowing
across sacred grounds, where the only fluids are rivers that run red with hemoglobin. And everything that persist makes no sense to a logical mind, causing a spontaneous combustion. Wait… That sounds like Earth.
[SORCERY] ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM
How long could you live without money:
How long does it take to starve?
What legendary musicians would you like to play badminton with?
Definitely GhostFace Killah. Or U-God. No explenation needed.
Do you have any projects about to launch? What’s the scoop on that?
GALAXY CLOAK is dropped April 12, 2016. Its going to be an atomic submarine surfacing above the clouds… Just wait… I will Have some 3rd and 4th quarter releases as well, but you’ll just have to wait for those… Watch the BASEMENT DWELLAZ bandcamp for that.
What was the last song you listened to before this interview:
Well its early in the morning, so I had to check how the PREMIER for “WHOZ THERE” by GALAXY CLOAK was doing on Youtube… So, pretentious or not; that’s what I listened too.
Whats the most embarrassing bands you listen too:
[MENES] My girl [Lilliann_Isley on Instagram] has a wide range of music she listens too.. I have to sit through some pretty ridiculous shit. I won’t name no names, but I find myself going back to Grade 8, and not in a good way. She got a great taste in music though, in the sense that, she’ll listen to and enjoy almost anything. Love ya you ICE WITCH.
[SORCERY] All the shit I listen to on the regs is fire.
Any Tours Planned:
That all comes in time; I know we want to do some, and we will, but as for RIGHT NOW, Nothing is in cement.
Why should people experience your music:
[MENES] Well, I truly believe music is VERY universal, but at the same time its like our ocular. We all perceive things differently, very differently. What I say could literally mean 1000 different things to 1000 different people. And with that comes a very lively experience because I write with serene imagery. I’m not as much a story teller as I am a picture painter. I believe in experience, and I truly believe our music gives you that. There are lots of little intricate details that only a mind similar to mine will pick up, but theres something for everyone I think.
[SORCERY] It’s hype, it’s strange, it’s loud, it’s interesting, just listen.
If you were facing unbeatable and fatal odds what song would you want to check out to? Why?
[MENES] Either Wu-Tang Clan “aint nothing ta F’ With” or “Cant it Be all so Simple”… These songs portray every spectrum of emotion for me. From bringing the ruckus no matter what the scenario to wishes that life was easier, but it never will be. This is the album I want in my casket with me. And if I ever need an adrenaline rush, or a taste of REAL music, this is what I bump.
[SORCERY] The instrumental version of NIN “Closer”
Stella or Guinness:
[MENES]Neither, I drink Lakeport Honey. Fuck expensive beer.
[SORCERY] Sierra Nevada
What musicians should quit forever and never be seen or heard from again:
A lot. Many, many, many.
What would you like to say to your fans:
I love each and everyone of you! Thank you for your constant and consistent support. We do this for YOU! Stay with us on this journey, and we will all reap the benefits. So much more music, and endeavors are to come, we are just getting started. P.E.A.C.E and BLESSINGS!
If you could accomplish one thing in a music carrer what would it be:
Simply to give the fans what they want, and never stray from what I love doing, and never jeopardize my integrity.
Top 5 Albums:
MF DOOM – Madvillainy or Viktor Vaugn
Killah Priest – Heavy Mental
Wu-tang Clan – Enter the Wu-tang (36 Chambers)
GhostFace Killah – Supreme Clientele
DMX – It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot
These aren’t even necessarily my 5 favorite albums of all times. I don’t think I could ever name them… They are just albums I’ve listened to 10,000 times.
What really pisses you off?
Mob mentality and haterade. People who hate just because they can. People who literally have nothing better to do then slander others. And fucking racists. Fuck you.
Who the fuck do you think you are?
I’m MENES the Pharaoh, and that shadow figure over there is SORCERY ORCHESTRA.. Kiss the emerald rings. WHO the FUNK are you!?
What do you geek out to besides music:
[MENES] Reading yo. Read, read, READ. I cant help myself. Whether its fiction, nonfiction or comics, I lose my self constantly… Right now I am reading The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, his literal magnum opus… It is one of my favorite reads in along time.
[SORCERY] Making things. Art, wood working, screen printing, skateboarding.
What is the grossest food you’ve ever eaten:
Name two people cooler then Evel Kneivel:
