(Rules of The Gauntlet: The artist (Like in this case Manuel Castillo (vocals) of Santiago, Chile based metal band Half Blood) is sent a butt ton of questions ranging from standard to stupid from which they must choose at least 12 to answer and return them to us with a minimum of tear stains.)
Tell me why your music rules. Or why it sucks.
it really rules but I’ll leave the work of listening to you to form your own opinion!
Tell me about your new album. The writing, vibe, production/producers, etc.
Our upcoming album is our debut, it’s a heavy, raw, album produced by us and co-produced by Logan Mader (Cavalera, Gojiera, Fear Factory) he produced the vocals, did the mix and master. The vibe on the album is really a mix of old school stuff mixed with modern metal, with heaviness and melody on it (just a little bit).
What are you working on right now?
Right now we are finishing a couple videos, a lyric video and the video of our big single called “Self Exile”. We will release the lyric video on march and then “Self Exile” in April.
Why do you make your style of music? Why not polka? or Japanese symphonic folk metal? or..?
We didn’t try to force anything when we were writing the album, and it really took a lot of time (a year and a half) because we wanted the best songs we could create, and at the time we didn’t put limits on what we wanted to create, so the final product was honest.
Which voice in your head is the craziest?
The one that told me “Be a musician!” hahaha
How often do you work on your music?
It’s almost a full time job, cause you have to be on everything; being an independent band with no support from labels makes you work harder, cause every move, every decision, is up to you, even the financial issues.
What is your philosophy? Motto?
People = Shit, all the way, since I was 13 years old
What’s the stupidest thing you have ever heard someone say?
Don’t do what you love to do, what an empty being
Who are your influences?
We have a lot, Slipknot, Tool, Gojira, Rage Against the Machine, Sepultura, Messhuggah, Cannibal Corpse, etc.
Peace or freedom? (You can’t have both.)Why?
Freedom, because I don’t believe in peace anymore, not with the human being ruling the earth, I think history is the best proof, we are fucked!
How long could you live without money?
Not a single day, I have a daughter, three members of the band are fathers, so you have to be there, and having a baby is really expensive now days!
What was the last song you listened to before this interview?
I’m listening to a Jinjer concert from Youtube, this band rules, after that was listening Thy art is murder, those two bands are the latest bands that blow my brains away.
What’s the most embarrassing band you listen to?
I think it could be my first attempt to form a band hahaha! 13 years old with a friend, we didn’t find a drummer, then no one had drum kits, at least on Chile, they were so expensive, the same thing with bass player, so we were two guitar players trying to play some sepulture songs on cheap out of tuning guitars.
Any tours planned?
We already have a couple dates, and more to come here on Chile, and we are working hard to get a good booking agency so we can play shows on the states or Europe .
Why should people experience your music?
Our music is honest, there’s true emotions on the album, so a lot of people can relate with the sound, the lyrics and the vibe of the record.
If you were facing unbeatable and fatal odds what song would you want to check out to? Why?
Soulfly – “Frontlines,” if I had to leave this world then it have to be this song, that way I can go for it and just say “Fuck it!”
Describe your face.
Don’t know how but I’m sure that I’m more fat than years before hahaha
What musicians should quit forever and never be seen or heard from again?
I think everyone should have the freedom to do music, art, to create something, even if they are doing it just for the money like mainstream pop or the shitty rap from nowadays.
What would you like to say to your fans?
We are working really hard to get stronger everyday, hope to see you all of you someday at our show!
Where do your song names come from?
In general from the lyrics, if that’s not the case, something related to the lyrics,
There’s a good chance you will look back and be embarrassed by your current hairstyle. Discuss.
That’s probably (hahaha) my only relief is that my Mohawk is not a hipster Mohawk ,
If you could accomplish one thing in a music career what would it be? When you achieve that will you quit?
Make a living from this, I think that’s what everyone is looking, if I can do that then theres no choice of quitting
Would you accept 1 million dollars now to give up any and all music forever? If not what is your price?
I’ve sacrificed so much to do this that theres no price, I’d rather live with a low profile forever than quit what I love.
Who the fuck do you think you are?
Why don’t you find out for yourself you pussy!
If you could ask yourself one question what would it be?
What do you geek out to besides your music? Please geek out on your geekiness.
I’m a geek, that’s a reality, I love video games, classic comic books, a big fan of Batman and Zelda!
How many unarmed but very angry 4 year olds would it take to kick your ass?
Not so many, I’m really tired right now haha
If you had a time machine what would you do with it?
Nothing, what I lived is what makes me the person who I am right now
If you won a chance to kiss Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber how would you escape to the space station?
I tell my wife, so she could end with my misery quick!
